The staining happens the moment dissolved manganese contacts oxygen, either in the air or through oxidizing agents like chlorine. Here's the most important thing a straight-talking water professional will tell you: don't buy equipment before you test. Manganese treatment is not one-size-fits-all, and the wrong system will either underperform or foul out quickly.

Once you have your test results, the treatment ladder generally looks like this:

  • Manganese under 0.5 mg/L, no iron: A quality ion-exchange water softener may handle it as a secondary benefit.
  • Manganese 0.5–3.0 mg/L: An oxidizing filter — greensand plus or a Birm filter — is the standard approach. These work by converting dissolved manganese to particulate form and filtering it out. Typical installed cost in Marion County runs $1,200–$2,500 depending on flow rate and media.
