The Soap Scum Test You Can Do Right Now

Before you spend a dollar, do this: fill a clear plastic bottle about one-third with water straight from your shower, add five drops of plain liquid castile soap (Dr. Bronner's unscented works), cap it, and shake vigorously for ten seconds.

  • Lots of white, fluffy lather, clear water = relatively soft water
  • Thin layer of bubbles, milky or cloudy water, soapy film on the bottle = hard water
