Two Different Sources, Two Different Fixes

Hydrogen sulfide — the gas behind that rotten-egg odor — can come from two places in your home water system:

  1. Your well water itself, where naturally occurring sulfate-reducing bacteria or sulfur deposits in the aquifer produce H₂S before the water ever reaches your house.
  2. Your water heater, where a chemical reaction is actively creating hydrogen sulfide inside the tank.

When the smell is present in both hot and cold water, the well is almost certainly the source. When the smell is only in the hot water, the water heater is usually the culprit.

The Anode Rod: Your Water Heater's Dirty Secret

Every conventional tank water heater has a magnesium anode rod suspended inside it. It's a sacrificial component — it corrodes so your tank doesn't. That's good engineering. The problem: magnesium reacts with sulfate-reducing bacteria (which are present in many Marion County well water supplies at levels too low to smell in cold water) to produce hydrogen sulfide gas. Heat accelerates the reaction dramatically. Result? Cold water that smells fine turns into a rotten-egg shower the moment it's heated.

  • The smell is worse after the water heater hasn't been used for a day or two (bacteria multiply in standing warm water)

The Quick Diagnostic Test

Before you spend a dollar on treatment, do this:

  1. Find a cold-water tap that doesn't run through your water heater — an outdoor spigot, or the cold side of a kitchen faucet if you know your plumbing layout.
  2. Let it run 30 seconds and smell it directly from the tap.
  3. Then run hot water from a sink or shower and compare.

If cold = no smell, hot = sulfur smell, you're dealing with a water heater issue, not a well issue.
