What's Actually Growing in There
There are three culprits responsible for most brine tank horror stories in this area:

Iron bacteria (like Gallionella or Leptothrix) thrive in that environment. 2. Salt mushing. When lower-quality salt (especially rock salt or cheap crystals) dissolves imperfectly, it leaves behind a thick, wet sediment at the bottom of the tank. This mush can solidify into a paste that clogs the brine pickup tube and prevents the softener from drawing a proper brine solution during regeneration.
3. Salt bridging. A hard dome of salt forms mid-tank, leaving an air gap beneath it. The softener "thinks" it has salt but it's not dissolving. You keep adding more salt on top of the bridge, the bridge grows, and the system slowly stops softening your water.

How to Know Your Brine Tank Is the Problem
Your first clue is often not the tank itself — it's your water. Hard water symptoms creeping back (scale on fixtures, soap that won't lather, stiff laundry) after years of soft water usually mean regeneration is failing. Check the tank. If you see any of the following, clean it now:
- Visible slime or biofilm (any color: brown, gray, green)
- Salt that looks wet, clumped, or discolored at the bottom

How to Clean a Water Softener Brine Tank (The Real Process)

If your resin tank smells or your water has any sulfur or iron odor, also add a resin cleaner (like Res-Up) to the brine well before that manual regeneration.
How Often in Ocala Specifically
General guidance says clean your brine tank every 1–2 years. In Marion County, be more aggressive:
- City water (Ocala Municipal Utilities): Once every 12–18 months is usually fine.
- Well water with moderate iron (1–3 mg/L): Every 6–12 months, plus use iron-out salt.
- Well water with heavy iron or known iron bacteria: Every 3–6 months, and consider whether a dedicated iron and sulfur removal system should be installed before the softener to protect the resin.
