That sounds dramatic, but here's the plain truth: Marion County well water is some of the hardest in North-Central Florida, and your water softener works overtime to handle it. Feed it the wrong salt and you get salt bridges, mushing in the brine tank, fouled resin, and wasted regeneration cycles. Feed it the right salt and the system just runs—quietly, invisibly, for years.

Why Marion County Well Owners Deal With This More Than City Water Customers

Ocala and the surrounding county sit on the Floridan Aquifer, a limestone formation that dissolves calcium and magnesium into well water as it moves through the rock. Most private well samples in Marion County test between 10 and 25 grains per gallon (gpg) of hardness. That's "very hard" to "extremely hard" by any standard classification.

City water from OEU or MCUA gets pre-treated before it reaches your meter. Well owners? You're starting from the raw aquifer. That means your softener regenerates more often, chews through more salt, and is more sensitive to salt quality than a system on a lightly-hardened city supply.

The catch: purity. Rock salt typically runs 95–98% sodium chloride, with the rest being minerals and sediment that don't dissolve. That leftover crud settles in the bottom of your brine tank, builds up over months, and eventually requires you to manually clean out a tank full of sludge. In Florida heat, that's a miserable afternoon.

Rock salt also tends to cake and form salt bridges more readily. A salt bridge is a hardened crust that forms across the top of the tank, creating an air gap underneath—your system thinks it has salt, keeps regenerating, but it's actually pulling from an empty brine reservoir. Your water goes hard again and you don't figure it out until someone notices the soap stopped lathering.

Verdict: Skip it for most Marion County homes. The $2/bag savings isn't worth the maintenance headaches.


Solar Salt — The Sweet Spot for Most Well Owners

Solar salt is made by evaporating seawater in large ponds, then harvesting the crystals. Purity runs 99.0–99.5% sodium chloride. It comes in pellet or crystal form; pellets bridge less than crystals, so if you've had bridge problems before, go with pellets.

Price: $8–$12 per 50 lb bag locally. Slightly more than rock salt, but the brine tank stays cleaner, bridges are rare, and your softener regenerates efficiently.

For the typical Ocala well household with 10–20 gpg hardness, solar salt pellets are the right everyday answer. They handle iron concentrations up to about 3 ppm without issue (above that, get a dedicated iron filter in front of the softener).

Verdict: This is the go-to recommendation for most Marion County well owners. High purity, reasonable cost, minimal maintenance.


Potassium Chloride — Worth the Premium in Specific Situations

Potassium chloride (KCl) softens water the same way sodium chloride does—ion exchange on the resin bed—but the regeneration waste contains potassium instead of sodium.

Price: $25–$35 per 50 lb bag. Yes, really. That's 2–3× the cost of solar salt.

When does it make sense?

  • Household members on sodium-restricted diets. Softened water treated with NaCl adds sodium to the water—roughly 20–40 mg per 8 oz glass depending on incoming hardness. Not huge for most people, but real. KCl eliminates that addition.
  • Shallow or sensitive wells in sandy Marion County soils. Softener discharge (backwash) goes to a drain, often tied to a septic system or eventually percolating into groundwater. In areas with sandy soil and high water tables, potassium is a less environmentally disruptive discharge than sodium.
  • Septic system concerns. Some research suggests high-sodium backwash can compact the drain field soil over time. Potassium doesn't carry the same risk.

The trade-off: you'll need to increase your softener's salt dose setting by roughly 10–15% because KCl is slightly less efficient at recharging resin than NaCl. Read your manual or have a tech set it correctly.

Verdict: Worth it for specific households. For the average Marion County well owner without sodium or septic concerns, the price premium is hard to justify.

One More Thing: Resin Cleaner

Whatever salt you choose, add a resin cleaner like Rust Out or Res-Up to your brine tank every few months if your well water carries any iron or manganese—which most Marion County wells do.
